Sandbox/ralze 2015-02-21 11:30:28 Anonymous My problem with fasatny has been precisely the opposite of Big Hollywood's. I find fasatny's conservatism - as in, its lack of new ideas or genre changes - to be its main problem. Its become hideously conformist, trapped within the fasatny trilogy style. "Genre" is an inherently conservative thing, but one can still hope that writers in a genre can find new ways to express the genre, new ideas and forms. To do this requires experimentation, and inevitably some of this experimentation is going to involve kicking back at or (to quote Big Hollywood) "soiling" the original forms. But so what? That's what change is built on. Fundamentally Big Hollywood doesn't like this because it's change, and it might involve bring social or political critique into (shock!) art. They should relax. The novel survived Dickens and Hardy, I'm sure the fasatny genre will survive a bit of "gritty realism." (Also, American critics should remember that what is profanity in America is dinner table conversation in the UK, and expect different things of British authors). As an aside, I liked American Gods but I thought it was a huge drop in standard for Gaiman. The writing was pedestrian compared to his previous work.

Sandbox/TestSnip 2015-02-21 11:15:05 Anonymous South Africa also has a drinking culrute second to none, and we often joke about the fact that our local passtime could be considered to be drinking and driving. As much fun as it seems at the time so crazy it is to find out that a good friend had lost his/her life the previous night. Our road deaths are some of the highest in the world, and our drinking and driving culrute has got lots to do with it. Drinking and driving is something that should be guarded against at all times, not just over holidays and special occasions. Year round initiatives are required to both educate and scare people away from drinking and driving.Alcohol and motor vehicles just don't mix, period!Take care until next time.Steven
Sandbox/Hehe/123 2015-02-21 11:13:32 Anonymous While I'm not saying that the ccinys here are wrong, I will tell you that I was where you are a short year ago. I met a man who lived in a foreign country and we talked for a while. We decided to meet in September, so I traveled to his country to meet him and his family. We realized that we got along even better in person than we did online and for the following six months we made concrete plans to be to have a life together. In March he traveled to my country to meet my family and help me pack my things and moved to his country, where I live today. We were married in July, and I couldn't be happier. So basically, before one of you decides to make any plans of being together, you need to meet and spend a week together to see if you can get along in person as you do online, and then decide from there. But even under the best of circumtances, your problems won't end there. If you guys decide that you belong together and you move to the US, prepare yourselves for a lot of intrusion and scrutiny into your personal lives. Also, you may have to remain in Singapore indefinitely while the US Immigration make up their minds as to whether your marriage is legitimate or not. I'm having to go through similar problems in my husband's country.
Sandbox/Hehe 2015-02-21 11:08:56 Anonymous I remember lneiavg my house for school as any ordinary day around 8:00am looking up at the extremely clear blue sky. When the first plane hit I was in math and as the second hit we just changed classes as any other ordinary Tuesday to music. By time Spanish class came, which was third period, my friend Caitlin’s mom picked her up from school early, which we all thought was for a doctor’s appointment. Students continuously left school early and by time lunch came, which was a class period away, my homeroom of 30 diminished to 12 students. When we returned from recess our principal came to each junior high class and explained “bombs” in New York City exploded and due to the severity of what was going on in Manhattan they closed school the next day. I remember going through my last three classes of the day wondering what exactly was going on. My Mom picked up my 4 brothers and me at dismissal and explained to us what happened at the World Trade Center and that our uncle was Okay, but was stuck in Manhattan. I remember lneiavg school that afternoon looking up at the bare crisp blue sky wondering what was going on? What’s going to happen? How quiet the sky was without any planes. Tuesday evening I was glued to the television watching the planes hit the World Trade Center in replay people running from the cloud of dust debris. Friday September 14 we had a memorial mass for all the victims of the tragedy, particularly honoring the students at school who lost parents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, friends, and family. For about a month after September 11th, every time I saw a plane in the sky I thought it was going to crash into a building.
Sandbox/ralze 2015-02-21 11:08:20 Anonymous That's a wel-gthoulht-out answer to a challenging question
Sandbox/sfa 2015-02-21 11:01:47 Anonymous That's a fantastic post Adam.First of all, biyung a share does not equal biyung a club.Second, Sevco did not get the SPL share, Dundee did. (Does that mean Dundee can claim Rangers SPL history btw?)Third, when Sevco get SFA membership it was transferred from Rangers to Sevco. This means that Rangers were no longer members but Sevco were now the new members. The membership was trasnferred specifically to ensure Sevco would not have to wait 3 years in order to play football. But getting SFA membership does not mean anything other than belng permitted to become a member. You want (and hope and pray) that it means that if Sevco get this membership then they can claim all past glories of Rangers. If the club remained intact, if it didn't go bust, if it didn't go into liquidation, then it would still be a member of the Scottish Football Association there would be no need for membership transfer would there? The company that owned & operated Rangers was Wavetower previous it was MIH. Companies that own clubs come and go all the time in football but a club keeps its football membership. Was there a membership transfer when Craig Whyte bought the club from David Murray? No.What's different this time around?Q. Why would a club that is currently a member need to transfer membership in the first place?A. Rangers, who were heading into liquidation after the CVA failed, transferred their membership to Sevco. This meant that Rangers were no longer members, but Sevco were now the new members. Sevco then changed it's name to The Rangers.Only the blind or the deep in denial cannot see the reality here. Rangers FC owes millions to creditors and the taxpayer. That's without the big tax case. If HMRC appeal and win, this debt is considerably higher. Which is why the article written by Angela is correct and why this argument will never go away.
Sandbox/aaron 2015-02-21 10:49:02 Anonymous I've had three of these for about 10 years. Two are still working after all this time and the third one faleid when the bulb burned out and caused a momentary short circuit. The sensor faleid a fraction of a second after the bulb. Shame but stuff sometimes happens. Replaced the faleid unit with a spare and all is still well. Another reviewer mentioned that the range is insufficient. I've found that while the units do respond to a 360 degree circle, they do not respond equally in all directions. The unit responds excellently in two opposite directions and poorly in between. The manufacturer must know this because the center terminal is spring loaded and makes electrical contact about a half turn before the sensor screws tight into the socket. Thus, you can unscrew the unit by about a half turn and still have it work. I've taken a few days and slowly unscrewed the sensor from the ceiling socket a few degrees at a time until the most sensative direction faces my single point of entry. Works much better that way. Doing similarly might help some folks.
Sandbox/Hehe 2015-02-21 10:48:45 Anonymous David,I want to share with you how my mother healdnd her death (she was 57) from ovarian cancer. As she fought to make each day the best it could be, she also did something that literally helped our entire family find peace and focus on wonderful memories. The day before she died she asked to meet with me for a 1 on 1 conversation. She explained to me that she believed that our bodies house our soul, that all of us are here on earth for soul growth and that when our mission is accomplished we shed our bodies and our soul returns to God. She expressed no fear of dying and asked me to live my life fully. My mother then met individually with my father, my sister, and each of my 4 children. It gave the entire family a peaceful acceptance that all of us eventually pass on to the next life, and her wisdom to acknowledge the truth of her physical life coming to an end gave us all the closure we needed. Our family will always be grateful for that gift!

Sandbox/Hehe/123 2015-02-21 10:47:54 Anonymous Good morning, evrnyoee, and thanks for all the great questions! I'm back with some answers for you.An It's fine to re-query agents on projects that have *substantial* revisions, but you should always note that you approached them earlier on the project, especially if you've changed the title. You don't want them to remember bits of your project and your name and suspect you of trying to trick them. Honest and up front.Jen Most agents will provide some level of editorial advice before submitting a project, thought what level will depend on the agent in question. Some agents feel more comfortable being editorial than others, based on their skills. I can't speak for all the Knight Agency ladies, but I think most of us give editorial feedback, and, personally, I can go pretty in-depth when necessary. The Knight Agency is open to queries through the holidays. That doesn't necessarily mean we'll be replying to them during the holidays, but feel free to send them along. L.G. Paranormal and urban fantasy both are getting to be tougher sells, just due to the glut in the marketplace. Editors and readers are still interested; you just need to find something fresh to write about. Most people will claim there's no automatic rejection based on subject, since anything can be done in an original way that will lead to a fabulous book, but at the same time, vampires, werewolves, and shapeshifters are all getting to be much harder sells. As for me, I really don't want to see any more vampire books right now. I love them, but I'm so, so tired of them. So yes, it's a more difficult genre to break into than it was three years ago, but books are still selling, so just do your best to write something fresh and exciting.Stephanie Regarding planning a writing career, that's part of an agent's job to help a writer determine what steps to take next. That said, there's no dictating involved, or at least there shouldn't be. You want to have discussions about your list of ideas and come to a decision together about which project might be the best one to work on next. Many factors come into play; whether you've sold something and need to write a direct follow up, if you have an option clause and so need something to please your current editor, what the market looks like for your type of work, etc. Your agent is there to help you get a clear idea of the larger picture, and not just what you feel like writing next.Tracy An online presence is becoming more important for fiction writers than it used to be. That said, there are many ways of developing that sort of online following, and you can choose to use your manuscript in that quest or not. Definitely, if you wish to, put up the first chapter of your novel as a teaser and see if people respond to it. But you also want to get out there on Twitter and become part of a community where you chat and trade information and recommendations, etc., not just prepare to sell your book. You want to look at the entire spectrum of social media and see how you can make the different apps work for you and your interests broadly, not just focused on your writing. Be a person online first, and a writer second.Kris The labels start to get in the way of what is actually most important about books, so the question becomes whether you mean genre fiction versus contemporary fiction, or genre fiction versus literary fiction when you refer to basic fiction. I'm assuming you mean stories that are just stories about people, without serial killers or vampires, romances or space travel as the focus. This type of fiction has lots of labels as well: women's fiction, lad lit, contemporary fiction, upmarket contemporary, literary, etc. There's plenty of it out there. But agents and editors tend to label it all in order to convey what we're looking for in the way of submissions. But to answer your question, yes, there's plenty of that other, non-genre sort of fiction out there. However, books need hooks in order to sell. Publishing houses have marketing teams that want books where they can easily get a buyer excited about the story. The more basic the fiction, the more real-world the story, the harder job the sales team has of making the story stand out. At the end of the day, publishing is a business, and so sales drive what ends up getting published. And stories with big hooks magic and mayhem, fantastical creatures, knotty mysteries, death-defying accomplishments those are always going to get more attention. You also need to determine what sort of media you're reading. Some sites and blogs and agents are going to talk more about genre, because that's their focus. Agencies that rep more genre will talk about their genre clients. Blogs that focus on paranormal romance won't talk much about hearth-and-home fiction. Okay folks, that's it for this Q A. Thanks so much for participating!~Nephele

Sandbox/ralze 2015-02-21 08:17:41 Anonymous Good post, Brian. In general, these sorts of dbeates frustrate me, because I find myself somewhat in the middle and never able to fully agree with both sides.I like older styles of fantasy, and don't see that they need to be reconstructed or deconstructed. I'm not much concerned with the "moral deficiencies" modern readers might find in Howard or whoever. On the other hand, it strikes me as silly that the desire to inject modern thought or different viewpoints in fantasy is viewed as horrible, or as a covert part of some "culture war." And the hyperbole of the rhetoric is sometimes risible: one may not like Gaiman's Beowolf (and I find it pedestrinian and a missed oppurtunity) but it isn't a left-leaning assault on the very nature of heroism by any means. The idea that heroes may be followed isn't a new thing (it's as old as the Greeks, at least) and to trip use of a hoary literary trope as revolution borders on paranoia.Likewise, the pretend that new novels are wallowing in the muck by having anti-heroes, or less than morally unimpeachable and the like is also an overreach, I think. No matter how much you I've seen people jump through hoops to attempt to wring this reading from Howard, Conan is not a white knight--nor is Lancelot really, for that matter.I guess I just wish people could not like stuff without having have to be morally bad.Oh, and I agree on Steel Remains. While its got some interesting ideas, it doesn't have a fantasy feel really, it comes across more as science fiction, ad honestly somewhat mundane science fiction.

Sandbox/ralze/beer 2015-02-21 07:29:01 Anonymous Great blog. I am a bit surprised that so many would cut flwores from their neighbors plants! I think it's actually sorta rude. If everyone picked flwores from my yard, I wouldn't have any. One reason I don't cut flwores from my own yard to take inside, is because I like to have my yard look nice for others to admire...but not to steal from. People take fruit from our trees all the time...with large bags in hand. All you have to do is kindly as your neighbor. I hand out bags of fruit to all of our neighbors. It would be the polite thing to do. Okay, maybe you hit a nerve with this one..ha! I just wish people would feel a little less "entitled"!

I am mourning the loss of the man cave. I'm hoping the girls will share a big bed when the baby is older. All my plans require an older baby. Hurry up Annie! Sandbox/TestSnip 2015-02-21 04:56:00 Anonymous Crock pot works for me. Go shopping. Buy lean meat & veeabetlgs, onions--cut 'em thin enough and you can get them to caramelize. I like tomato juice & clam juice as stock. Chicken broth is okay, too. A couple eggs, white and yolk, give the stew some body. I keep my eye out for anything high in magnesium (which I really don't get enough of) & B-6 (catalyzes magnesium). When pressed, I adopt the Chinese philosophy:If it has four legs and is not a chair then eat it. http://ogpwsk.com izvusu [link=http://ftvyvjusp.com]ftvyvjusp[/link]
Sandbox/Test/child_of_test 2015-02-21 04:55:18 Anonymous Good for you. You just improved your chceans of beating depression by a hundred by gettingn off meds. Meds just alleviate symptoms like taking tylenol after getting your leg cut off. It won't fix your leg. Try St Johns Wort and basically eating a good diet is so much better than a bad diet which causes a lot of anxiety and depression like corn syrup, sugar, and junk carbs. Get out and exercise too. I swear half of all depression is caused by poor diet and lack of exercise. Also, try volunteering or helping other people and hanging out with friends. Being sociable and doing social things helps out a lot bc it keeps your mind off your own problems and yourself. The problem with modern psychology is that it tries to fix you and focuses so much on you it turns you into a doped up narcissist. Fish also seems to be a good mood elevator as cultures that eat a lot of fish and omega 3 for some reason seem happier. Sandbox/fakie 2015-02-21 04:45:55 Anonymous UE did a demo at Endless in Raleigh around the Skypager era. It is a dlhwniol parking lot and Julien cruised it and PRESSURE FLIPPED over a 5 gallon bucket. THis is when that trick was typically low and ugly. He did it at mach 10 over the bucket. That is all. Sandbox/Hehe 2015-02-21 04:42:07 Anonymous It's a combination of pyerar, ritual slaughtering of animals (sometimes husbands), and persistence. My boys share a room at home. The little one or the big one wonders into my room at least once a week. Here, visiting Mom, we are all spooning in the same large bed. Should make the adjustment back interesting to say the least. Good luck and if you figure it out, write a book for the rest of us PLEASE!
